Altona Beach
Village
Tucked away in
a peaceful pocket of Port Phillip Bay, Altona Beach Village
is reminiscent of the days when everyone knew everyone in
the local shopping centre.
Altona’s
history as a sleepy seaside village is still evident today.
From the leafy street lined shopping strip, the old pier at
the end of Pier Street stretches into the water for some 300
metres. The pier has been used by anglers, swimmers and
tourists alike for decades. A walk along it’s planks is the
perfect way to end a bout of shopping or after enjoying a
meal at one of Altona’s cafes or restaurants.
Opposite the beach, Logan
Reserve was originally the front yard of Altona’s first
European settler, whose Homestead still stands today,
overlooking the sea as it has done since the late 1800’s.
Altona’s Historical Society is now housed in this fully
restored building which is well worth a look during your
visit.
A unique and vibrant
street market is held every Tuesday (9am-3pm) in Pier and
Railway Streets, offering a variety of art, craft and fresh
produce.
Altona
Gate Shopping Centre
Altona Gate
Shopping Centre is a four level sub-regional centre located
approximately 10km west of the Melbourne CBD. It
incorporates a car park and gymnasium at basement level with
three floors of retail trading, including late night
shopping on Thursday and Friday.
Van Gogh's Sun
Flowers
No stop in
Altona would be complete without viewing the town's own
contribution to the Guinness Book of World Records! Dubbed
the Largest Painting on an Easel, the giant replica of
Vincent Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers' will simply take your breath
away!
In 1998,
local artist and school teacher, Cameron Cross had a vision:
He would create a landmark that would combine Altona's
reputation as the Sunflower Capital of Canada with it's deep
artistic roots. With assistance from the Altona and District
Chamber of Commerce, this vision was realized. How was this
accomplished?
First,
a 76'6'' high, 27,000 lb, three-legged easel was engineered
and constructed. Then, 24 sheets of 3/4'' plywood were
laminated together to form the "canvas". Top this off with
talent, combined with 17 gallons of paint, and the vision is
complete! Originally located north of the
Altona Park,
the painting was moved to is new location on 10th avenue in
the north east corner of town in 2006. This wonder must be
seen to be believed!
