Newport Lakes Parkland
The only clue that this great park was once a quarry and landfill is the design of the picnic shelters. Built out of rough timber and corrugated iron to resemble the quarry workers' huts, the shelters provide protection from the elements and can be reserved by phone. The park is large enough to have its own full-time ranger and features a lake, fantastic adventure playground, amphitheatre, walking tracks and barbecues. A wetlands area planted with native flora is now home to many species of birds, amphibians and reptiles.

Science Works and Planetarium
The Science Works is a hands-on highly interactive science museum for all ages which features different programs throughout the year. The emphasis is on fun. It is located in Booker St and is open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. daily, tel: (03) 9392 4800. A new digital planetarium is located on the grounds and is part of the complex. It is open in the evenings.

The Substation

The Hobsons Bay Community Arts Centre, known as 'The Substation', is a high profile community project within the suburb of Newport in the inner west of Melbourne. The building itself is an imposing brick structure located within Newport village.

Originally used to convert electricity for the railways for half a century, Newport’s substation is one of the oldest in the metropolitan system, and also one of the largest.
